WHY RECYCLE?

Recycling is a process to change (waste) materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to plastic production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" waste hierarchy.

Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics. The composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste—such as food or garden waste—is also considered recycling. Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection center or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing.

HOW TO CHECK IF A BUSINESS IS SUSTAINABLE?

Many companies have adopted sustainable business practices, some better than others. Recent data has shown that consumers are more likely to buy a product or a service if the company is making an effort to mitigate any environmental and social impact. On the other hand, greenwashing is a concept to be aware of. It’s when a company or an organization is more focused on the appearance of being environmentally friendly than on minimizing their environmental impact. As a result companies have turned to accredited sustainability certifications as a third-party verification process. These are voluntary norms and standard relating to environmental, social and ethical issues that help consumers make more informed choices.
The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is a voluntary program that helps sheep farmers meet consumer, retailer, and brand demands. The standard certifies they meet rigorous animal welfare and land management requirements.
The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a global not-for-profit organisation and the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world. BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future.
B Lab certification is a third-party standard requiring companies to meet social sustainability and environmental performance standards, meet accountability standards, and be transparent to the public according to the score they receive on the assessment. B Lab certification applies to the whole company across all product lines and issue areas
Fair Trade is a product-oriented certification aimed at promoting the lives of farmers and workers through trade. Fairtrade's work is guided by a global strategy focused on ensuring that all farmers earn a living income, and agricultural workers earn a living wage. Fairtrade works with farmers and workers of more than 300 commodities. The main products promoted under the Fairtrade label are coffee, cocoa, banana, flowers, tea, and sugar.
BSCI The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), contributes to the global improvement of working conditions in factories and on farms. BSCI provides companies with a common code of conduct based on internationally accepted guidelines, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Rights of the Child. Companies that are members of the BSCI implement the Code in their supply chain and thus contribute to sustainable improvement of working conditions.
Marine stewardship council is an independent non-profit organization which sets a standard for sustainable fishing . Seafood products can display the blue MSC ecolabel only if that seafood can be traced back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified as sustainable.
Rainforest Alliance The Rainforest Alliance is an independent and accredited certification for coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas, wood and tourist services. The certification applies strict requirements in the field of working conditions and environmental and nature conservation

Green Key is an independent international standard within the leisure industry. The label has three levels and sets requirements in terms of energy savings, waste and sustainable sourcing. The highest level (gold) is only awarded to companies that meet optional measures.
Cradle to Cradle (C2C) is an independent international certification. Certified products are demonstrably sustainable due to the use of cleaner raw materials and the reduction of waste flows and CO2 emissions during, but also after, the life cycle of a product. Accordingly, C2C is aligned with the thinking of the circular economy
GreenSeat is an independent and accredited certification for the travel sector. Certified businesses offer travellers the possibility of offsetting the CO2 emissions of car and air travel as standard.
